MASSENA - A Norfolk man scheduled for induction into the Massena Central High School Hall of Fame in September lost his life this past weekend following a motorcycle accident near Saranac Lake.
Ricky Aslanian died Saturday after being ejected from his motorcycle on Route 30 in Harrietstown, near Upper Saranac Lake, according to state police at Ray Brook.
Mr. Aslanian, 60, was driving north at about 1:10 p.m. near the Route 30 intersection with County Route 45 when he drove off the shoulder of the road and was ejected.
Police said he was taken to Adirondack Medical Center, Saranac Lake, where he was pronounced dead.
He participated in track and field, football and wrestling while at Massena.
Albert N. Nicola coached Mr. Aslanian in both football and wrestling.
He was on my first championship wrestling team in 1971, Mr. Nicola said. He was a heavyweight and he was one of the senior leaders on that team.
Mr. Nicola said Mr. Aslanian was popular with his teammates and other children in school.
He was a great guy everyone liked him, Mr. Nicola said.
After graduating from Massena in 1971, Mr. Aslanian attended West Point Military Academy.
He continued to serve in the Army until receiving an honorable discharge in 1980. Mr. Aslanian is survived by his wife, Sheila; and three grown children, Jason, Garth and Alexis; as well as his mother, Marie Jeanette Aslanian.
