POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam Alumni Association recently honored Donald L. Lougheed with Honorary Lifetime Membership.
Honorary Lifetime Membership is presented to non-alums who have made exceptional contributions to the SUNY Potsdam Alumni Association and/or the college. Lougheed was recognized for his unprecedented generosity and service to the College.
Donald now joins his wife, Kathy Kofoed Lougheed 54, as a Potsdam alum. They are the true definition of a partnership, and in this case, a wonderful marriage. According to Don, he made the best decision of his life when he asked Kathy to marry him. Now the two are classmates as well as partners.
A Columbia University graduate, Lougheed built a successful business selling cars and recreational vehicles. After finishing college, the couple settled first in Rochester to raise their two children, Scott and Allison, before moving to Texas, where Don started several new dealerships. Over the years, he received multiple industry awards and was named the largest seller of Jayco brand RVs in the world.
Although they remained connected from a distance by contributing to the college every year, it wasnt until recently that the Lougheeds deepened their involvement with Potsdam. Upon hearing of the impact that two Potsdam graduates, Dorothy Albrecht Gregory 61 and Gary C. Jaquay 67, had on Kathys beloved Crane Chorus, the Lougheeds wanted to know how they too could be a part of the reinvigoration of the arts on campus.
That question led to the creation of the annual Lougheed Festival of the Arts, a two-week celebration of the visual arts, creative writing, dance, music and theatre. Their gift provides a forum for students and faculty to showcase their artistic talents by working with visiting artists from around the globe who come to Potsdam to work with and inspire SUNY Potsdam students.
Throughout the inaugural festival in 2012, the Lougheeds were deeply moved by the gratitude of students, which not only confirmed their decision but also motivated them to give even more. Together, the Lougheeds are now the single largest donors in the Colleges history.
