T-shirts and signs advocating the continuation of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center here were sold and distributed Friday at City Hall.

Quickly, according to Coralee Barrett, secretary to the mayor and the city manager.

She said she started at 8 a.m. with 189 T-shirts, each available for a $10 donation.

By mid-morning, 108 had been sold.

“Now it’s 10:30 and we’ve pretty much depleted our supply,” Ms. Barrett said. “It’s been a great response.”

By 3:30 p.m., there were just 32 T-shirts left and all 500 signs were gone, their “Save SLPC” and “SLPC = Excellence” messages collected to be put on display all over the north country.

“It was a very good day,” Ms. Barrett, recalling the visitors to buy T-shirts and pick up signs, the latter with requests to spread the message outside of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center’s city home.

“Is it OK if we take them to Massena?” she said. “To Gouverneur? It’s nice that people are bonding together.”

Martha J. Jenner, a 35-year supervising housekeeper at the psychiatric center from Ogdensburg, left City Hall with her arms full of T-shirts and signs.

She’s worried that the psychiatric center will indeed close down.

And much more.

“Absolutely,” Ms. Jenner said. “It’s all about the patients. They’re our first concern. The jobs come second.”

Task Force Chairman Charles W. Kelly said Friday afternoon that more shirts and signs have been ordered and will arrive soon.
