CANTON Independence Party petitions filed by St. Lawrence County District Attorney Republican candidate Mary E. Rain are valid, county election commissioners have decided.
As a result, Ms. Rain will appear on three lines, including Conservative, in the upcoming general election. She is running against incumbent District Attorney Nicole M. Duve, who will be on the Democratic and Working Families party lines.
Ms. Rains Independence petitions were challenged by Anne Monck, Canton.
Democratic Election Commissioner Jennie H. Bacon and Republican Election Commissioner Thomas A. Nichols disagreed on whether some of Ms. Moncks objections were valid. Overall they decided that 32 of the 215 signatures on the petitions were invalid, which did not put Ms. Rain under the 163 signatures she needed for the party designation.
Ms. Rain said she thought the petitions would be upheld after reviewing the challenges made by Ms. Monck.
There were so many objections that were erroneous, she said.
