WEST CARTHAGE Construction activity should be seen soon at the South Main Street boat launch and trailhead, according to River Area Council of Governments circuit rider Kathleen M. Amyot. The project is scheduled to be completed in September.
According to literature that is now being distributed, an ad hoc committee was formed last year to guide the development and expansion of the existing boat launch and picnic area as a motorized and non-motorized trailhead to promote year-round recreation activities.
Now, as the construction stage is about to begin, the committee is looking for donations of items that were not budgeted for, including trees, a gazebo, park benches, barbecues, signs and a retention wall.
The project has received $114,908 from the Recreational Trails Grant Program in 2009, $4,500 from the Black River Advisory Council and $8,000 from the T.F. Wright Foundation.
Funding applications for the project have been filed with the state Consolidated Funding Application, the state Environmental Facilities Corp. Green Infrastructure Grant Program in the amount of $75,000 and the state Environmental Protection Fund Single Purpose Planning Grant in the amount of $62,500.
