HANNAWA FALLS - Dozens of swimmers will take to the water on Aug. 3 to Swim a Mile for Hospice, and swim a mile long course on Hannawa Pond in Hannawa Falls.
Last year, this non-competitive event brought together over 80 recreational swimmers from their teens through their eighties. The event will begin at 8 a.m. at the Postwood Park beach. Swimmers will be grouped by ability and will complete the mile course at their own pace. Safety is our top concern, said event organizer Brad Catling.
We will have a fleet of kayaks, motorboats, lifeguards and official safety personnel on hand to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time.
Each swimmer is asked to raise at least $100 for Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley (youth swimmers age 14-17 are asked to raise $50). This includes the $25 registration fee. Swimmers, boaters and other volunteers will enjoy a light breakfast and will receive a tee shirt and other tokens for their participation.
In addition, the school whose students (as a group) raise the most money for Swim a Mile for Hospice will display a special trophy until the next years event. The name of the winning school is etched on the trophy each year. For the last two years, the winner was Potsdam Central School, where the trophy has been displayed.
Asked why she was participating again this year, one swimmer replied, This is only my second year participating in the Hospice swim, however, after my first year I just knew I wanted to sign up again. I just love the spirit of it. I love everyone getting together to contribute toward such a great cause while simultaneously having an absolute blast! Couldnt think of a better way to spend a beautiful summer morning.
