The City Council is backing the Frederic Remington Art Museum in its efforts to secure a $300,000 grant from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation to replace the historic Parish Mansion’s roof.

The council unanimously approved the endorsement at Thursday’s special meeting.

Laura A. Foster, interim executive director of the museum, said the money would be put toward fixing the roof at the administrative building, 311 Washington St., and the Parish Mansion, the location of the Frederic Remington gallery.

“To have the endorsement of the city in which the museum is located tells the state that this is an important project and not some hare-brained project that doesn’t matter,” Ms. Foster said.

Ms. Foster said the museum is also soliciting support letters from other people, including state representatives, to demonstrate the importance of the museum to the community as a tourist destination. That support could help bolster the museum’s case for funding.

“We need the state to know that we are meaningful to the community,” she said.

The roofs have been leaking with increasing severity over the years, Ms. Foster said.

Contractors and maintenance workers have patched the roofs many times recently, she said.

“It really looks like a roof that’s in trouble,” Ms. Foster said.

The grant application will be filed with the state on Aug. 12, Ms. Foster said, with the goal of beginning the process of fixing the roof next year.

Ms. Foster also noted that community support for the museum’s ongoing restoration projects has made a big impact.

The south, west and east walls of the museum are all in the process of renovation. Ms. Foster said she hopes to have the work complete by the end of the year.
