GLEN PARK — Whitewater rafters passing near the hydroelectric dam on Friday afternoon are being credited for saving a 22-year-old Watertown man who fell about 20 feet down a cliff along the Black River.

Rafters from ARO and Hudsen River rafting companies put Damien Morrow into one of their boats and brought him to the 12E side of the river, where members of the Strategic Tactics and Rescue (STAR) team and Glen Park Fire Department brought him a steep embankment, carrying him on a backboard. He was taken by ambulance to a helicopter awaiting at a landing zone in Adams Center and taken to a Syracuse hospital.

Quory H. Suluri, 23, of Watertown, said he and Mr. Morrow had climbed down to the river’s edge with his buddy, Quory H. Suluri, 23, of Watertown, to find inspiration for their music. At about 3 p.m., as the men scaled back up the cliff, the injured man lost his footing and fell.

“I had him but he slipped out of my hands,” Mr. Soluri said. “It was crazy.”

Luckily, the rafters were there to help, he said.

A passing whitewater rafting company found him and returned him to the Route 12E side of the river, where members of the Strategic Tactics and Rescue (STAR) team and Glen Park Fire Department lifted him up the cliff on a backboard. He was taken by ambulance to a helicopter awaiting at a landing zone in Adams Center.
