The St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Task Force is adding up to seven new members today according to City Manager John M. Pinkerton.

Mayor William D. Nelson is adding the members to the Task Force in an effort to increase the pressure on the state Office of Mental Health to keep inpatient services in Ogdensburg.

OMH released a plan last week to close adult and child inpatient services in Ogdensburg and move them to Syracuse and Utica respectively.

“People are distraught,” Mr. Pinkerton said. “They’re in disbelief; they’re feeling like OMH has sold them down the river.”

Mr. Pinkerton said the additional members is “only the tip of the iceberg” and the task force is planning on ramping up its efforts in the coming days and weeks.

Mr. Pinkerton also said people should send personal stories of their connection with the Psychiatric Center to City Hall so they can show Albany the impact the center’s closure would have on the community.
