GLENFIELD – Gerald R. Jerry Reed, 91, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 16, 2013 at Lewis County General Hospital with his family at his side.
Jerry was born on September 26. 1921, in the Town of Turin, the son of the late Roland F. and Mabel Meiss Reed. He attended General Martin Central School until his sophomore year then went to Lowville Academy in order that he might play in Luther B. Askins band. He graduated in 1940. With his brother Leon, they formed The Stardusters Orchestra. They played locally during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Jerry was a trumpet player and also played several years with the Lowville Village Band. He worked for Niagara Mohawk before being inducted into the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 where he was a radio operator on a B17. He was honorably discharged in 1945 from March Field CA.
On May 20th, 1944 Jerry was married to Jean McGrath of Lowville at Xavier University by Rev. Owen J. Englum After his discharge they moved back to Lowville and Jerry went to work for Niagara Mohawk until they purchased their farm on RT. 12 at Glenfield in July 1948.
Over the years Jerry served the farming community in many ways. He was a director and past president of the Lowville Producers Cooperative; member of the Lewis County Farm Bureau; selected as Senior Farmer of the Year in 1980. He served on the local Farm Credit board and was selected to the Farm Credit District Board, Springfield, MA in 1978-1983. Jerry and Jean sold their farm to their son Gerald Jr. in 1984. In his retirement Jerry restored a 1920 Fordson tractor and also had a 1922 model. He enjoyed walking, traveling and sports especially the Yankees and Syracuse Basketball.
In addition to his distinguished Farming career, Jerry served on the Board of Education at both General Martin Central School and for the newly formed South Lewis Central School as both a member and President. In 1985 Jerry accepted a position on the Lewis County Board of legislators which he held until 1997. He was a member of the Lewis County Historical Society. Jerry was of the Methodist Faith.
Surviving Jerry are his wife Jean and two sons, David (Judy), Louisville, KY and Gerald Jr.(Susanne) of Glenfield; four daughters, Carol, Greensboro, NC; Jane (Timothy OConnor) of Lowville; Sue Ellen (Thomas) Machuga of Parish; Mary (Anthony) Passannante of Chapel Hill, NC; eleven grandchildren, Michael Higby and Christine Higby Wilson, Timothy and Phillip OConnor, Holly Fehr and Kelly Virkler, Graig and Megan Reed, and Elizabeth, Charles and Anna Passannante, and five great-grandchildren, Claire and Sadie Wilson, Ian OConnor and Amelie and Reed Fehr. There are 5 step-grandchildren.
Jerry was predeceased by his brother, Leon and sister, Muriel Traxel.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Chapman retired minister officiating. Military burial will be in the Old Glendale Cemetery.
