Blue Wing Services Inc., a St. Paul, Minn., communications consultant, will be in Jefferson County this week to conduct a survey of county emergency response and law enforcement personnel to gauge weaknesses in the countys public safety communications system.
In April, the Jefferson County Board of Legislators authorized the spending of $89,900 in federal money to pay for the study.
The system is aging and rife with deficiencies and problems, according to Joseph D. Plummer, county director of Fire and Emergency Management.
Blue Wings visit represents the first of two phases focused on diagnosing problems with the system and suggesting solutions. It will be covered by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
After the study is completed, the county will have a better idea how much the overhaul of the system will actually cost.
There is little doubt that it will be a big-dollar purchase, according to Mr. Plummer.
