STAR LAKE Residents came out to the Star Lake Fire Department over the weekend for two days of fun, food, fireworks and fundraising.
The volunteer department, founded in 1929, hosted its annual fundraiser, which began with Saturdays field day featuring live music, 20 vendors, bounce houses, a parade and a fireworks show.
A lot of people come out for the fireworks, said Lynn M. LeRoux, Star Lake. Its one of the best firework shows in Northern New York.
First Assistant Chief Cory M. Daniels said the field days are held on the second weekend in July, and vendors pay $10 to participate.
Residents returned to the fire hall on Sunday for a chicken barbecue and an auction of community donations including bikes, home decorations and other used items.
Mr. Daniels, who has been the assistant chief for three years, said the annual event brings in a majority of the departments funding. He said last years auction brought in $2,200.
Its just a nice family day, Joni L. Daniels, wife of Mr. Daniels, said Sunday. Yesterday was the fireworks and parade and there were games and prizes for the kids. Everythings pretty reasonable and not too expensive.
Although there were more donated items to be auctioned last year, Mr. Daniels said he thinks the department will still raise enough.
Yesterday both sides of the road were packed from Nice N Easy all the way to Twin Lakes with people watching the parade, he said. So we had probably between 1,000 and 2,000 people here for the parade and fireworks.
Tom C. Brady, Rochester, is a summer resident of Star Lake who participates in the auction every year. This year, he purchased a blue bicycle for $10, though thats not the only reason he attended. The reason I come is for the Fire Department, he said.
