Construction crews will break ground on a $15.3 million renovation project at Ogdensburg Free Academy as early as next week.

Shawn M. Travers, an architect with Bernier, Carr & Associates, Watertown, said the construction project will continue until December and then begin again in the spring.

Mr. Travers expects the renovations to the athletic fields, Edgar A. Newell II Memorial Dome, concession building and press box to be completed in late 2014.

At Thursday’s special Ogdensburg Board of Education meeting, the board approved bids for the project, which is phase three of a multiyear, $57 million district-wide renovation.

With the beginning of phase three, Mr. Travers said the total project is just short of halfway complete, noting work at John F. Kennedy Elementary School is still underway.

Mr. Travers said 23 companies submitted bids for the project, but the board awarded the following contracts to the low bidders:

n Cunningham Excavation, Cazenovia, for site work, $3.7 million.

n Murnane Building Contractors, Plattsburgh, for general construction, $5.1 million.

n Ductman Mechanical, Norfolk, for mechanical work, $2 million.

n Norwood Plumbing, Norwood, for plumbing, $437,700.

n Collins-Hammond Electrical Contractors, Ogdensburg, for electrical work, $1.1 million.

The project will include renovations to the west side of the 1968 high school wing, a restoration of the dome’s roof, installing a turf field, new baseball fields, grandstands, tennis courts, a new concession building and renovations on the soccer and softball fields.

Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey said residents can expect to see a lot of work beginning very quickly.

“There will be a lot of action on the fields this summer,” he said.
