POTSDAM — It has been nearly a year since a sudden windstorm ripped the roof from Sergi’s Italian Restaurant, 10 Market St. Now, after months of repairs, the downtown mainstay has returned home.

While the banquet hall next door still needs a few more weeks of repairs, the restaurant reopened Wednesday. State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-Rome, came to Potsdam to mark the occasion as the first pizzas started baking at the original location.

“It’s super. It’s great to come home,” said Sergi’s owner Saverio “Sam” Spagnolo.

Since the windstorm last July 19, Sergi’s had operated out of a temporary location at 38 Market St. The smaller kitchen led to a more limited menu, and Mr. Spagnolo said he is looking forward to bringing back the full Sergi’s experience.

The roof at 10 Market St. was replaced, and the interior of the building was gutted and rebuilt during renovations. Regardless of the upgrades, longtime patrons should expect few changes in the menu or decor.

“All the customers, everybody’s always asking me, ‘When will you come back?’” Mr. Spagnolo said. The estimated reopening was delayed several times as the lengthy repairs continued.

The Spagnolo family owns the 38 Market St. location they occupied for the last year. Mr. Spagnolo said there are no new tenants for that building lined up, as he has been focusing on the restaurant repairs.
