POTSDAM Signs went up Tuesday for the new Aldi store being built on Route 11 in Potsdam.
The discount grocery store going up across the street from Walmart Supercenter is on schedule to open Aug. 1, said Larry E. Paige, construction manager on site for the general contractor Patriot Enterprises, Cazenovia.
Mr. Paige said only some touch up work was left to finish before the opening. He said the project seemed to go by quickly with an average of 20 men a day working on the building construction.
Theres not really much left, just a little bit of exterior work, he said. It seems accelerated, but they tell me a schedule for when Im supposed to be done and thats when Im done.
After a year of planning, the building project began in early April. It was delayed, however, when permits and approvals took longer to obtain than expected because residents nearby had concerns about the noise that a construction project would bring to the neighborhood.
Despite the slow beginning, all thats left for the contractors to finish up is the paving, landscaping and some finalizing work on the inside including painting and wall paper, Mr. Paige said.
We just have to set up the cash registers, he said. When the store takes over they set up all their shelving and stock.
Officials of Aldis public relations department did not return requests for information.
