LISBON - The Hammond Red Devils U12 Softball team emerged as champions of the First Annual Lisbon Town Recreational Department U12 Softball Tournament on Sunday.

Hammond knocked off Gouverneur 15-3 in the finals to finish the tournament 5-0.

Gouverneur won against Lisbon in the semi-final and Hammond needed extra innings against Ogdensburg 7-6 in six innings in the other semi-final.

“It was just a great tournament,” said Scott Wilhelm, one of the many organizers.

“We had three more teams but they backed out late but for our first it was a success. Our softball program is looking to bring an introduction to softball division into the mix next season and the funds raise yesterday and today will buy some needed equipment for that.”

Hammond used the formula of excellent pitching, timely hitting and defense for the title. Against Gouverneur, Alison Crosby went 2-3 with a homerun and pitched the win with Sarah Johnson. Crosby pitched eight innings in the tournament with 10 strikeouts and Johnson had 20 strikeouts in 12 innings. Johnson went 3-3 in the final and Taylor Arquitt (2-3), Hannah Tanner (2-4), Izzy Soluri (1-3), Courtney Cazziol (2-4) and Savanah Rathburn (1-1) also contributed with hits. Madison Cazziol was the team’s main catcher. Alecia Parrow and Alvia Crosby rounded out the squad.

Participating for Gouverneur in the finals were: Abby Gaumes, Laney Smith, Marina Woods, Shea Mussaw, Alexis Gagne, Abby Sullivan, Elaine Lumley, Carlee Lumley, Jade MacIntosh, and Alicia Labow.

In the semi-final against Ogdensburg, Hammond’s Hannah Tanner singled, stole second and thirdbase before scoring on Parrow’s game-winning hit.
