CAPE VINCENT The town government is seeking candidates for the newly formed development committee.
This joint village-town committee will replace the Cape Vincent Local Development Corp., which is dissolving partly because of burdensome state audit requirements.
Like its precursor, the committee will aim to facilitate economic development in Cape Vincent and secure federal and state grant funding to assist the growth of local businesses.
The Town Council gets to name three members to the seven-member committee and is looking for people who are knowledgeable about and familiar with recent developments in the town.
The deadline to apply is July 17. For more information, call the town clerk at 654-3660.
Councilman John L. Byrne, who also serves as the vice president of the LDC, said the committees first task will be to determine whether to hire a professional development planner or a grant application writer.
Members then will seek candidates for the paid position and make a recommendation to the town and village governments, which will split the overall cost of the committees operations 60-40.
Mr. Byrne said the goal is to launch the development committee formally in August or, ideally, as soon as this month.
The village government can name two members to the committee and the Cape Vincent Improvement League and local Chamber of Commerce each will make an appointment.
