Lisbon Fire Department plans demolition derby fundraiser

LISBON – It’s not every day smashing cars together in a muddy field is considered constructive, but the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department is banking on that activity to help it raise money.

The department is hosting its third annual demolition derby fundraiser on July 14.

“Anyone who has seen it before loves it, and anyone who hasn’t seen it will fall in love with it,” said Mark G. Hyde, an emergency medical technician and the event organizer.

The demolition derby since its start three years ago has grown to become one of the department’s largest fundraisers, Mr. Hyde said.

More than 30 cars of various sizes are expected to compete, Mr. Hyde said, and there will be small, medium, large and “outlaw” class heats leading up to the final.

Outlaw class vehicles include four-wheel-drive trucks and vans, Mr. Hyde said.

“Anything goes,” he said.

The rules are “old school,” Mr. Hyde said. “Reinforcing is not allowed. The cars are pretty much just stripped down; move the battery, move the fuel tank and go for it.”

And, of course, the heats don’t end until there’s only one car left running.

This translates into a solid four to six hours of demolition, Mr. Hyde said.

The July 14 crashing and smashing starts at noon at the Firemen’s Field on the Pray Road.

Spectators will be charged $5 and children under the age of 12 are admitted free.

Mr. Hyde said concessions, including ice cream, will be available all day.

“It’s a family event, and we usually pull in a pretty good crowd,” Mr. Hyde said.

Anyone looking to compete in the demolition derby may register anytime until 11:30 a.m. on July 14.

Registration is $25 and the prize for winning the day is $600.

To preregister or learn more about the rules, call Mr. Hyde at 528-5044, John Hyde at 322-1930 or the Lisbon Fire Station at 393-5531.
