Shirley H. Smith, 74, our beloved sister and devoted friend, formerly of Lacona, died Thursday morning at the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown where she had resided since July 2002. The funeral will be Monday at 3:00 pm at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. Denise Bowen, pastor of the Orwell United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Smithville Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 pm preceding the funeral.
Shirley was born April 23, 1939 in Henderson, daughter of Floyd and Elsie Heaslip Smith. She graduated from Henderson Central School in 1957 and the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1960. She later obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University in 1964. She worked at the House of the Good Samaritan and then for the Sandy Creek Central School as a nurse from 1967 - 1979, and cheerleading coach, retiring due to disability.
Shirley was a member of the Orwell United Methodist Church, DALKED (Do a Little Kindness Everyday), NYS Teachers Assoc., Henderson Fire Department Auxiliary and a Life Member of the Oswego County Fair Association.
She is survived by three brothers; Dewy Smith and Harry Smith, both of Henderson; Ross (Louise) Smith, Brodnax, Va; one sister Edith Richmond, Henderson and several nieces and nephews. Pre-deceasing her is a brother Gene Smith, and four sisters, Helen Rendleman, Eleanor Smith, Joyce Smith and Joan Hamilton.
