Watertown, NY- Arletha “Arley” M. Backus, 89, 707 Franklin Street passed away Sunday, June 30th under the care of her devoted granddaughter Janelle Travis, Hospice of Jefferson County, and surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Backus was born on March 13, 1924 in West Martinsburg, NY, daughter of Theodore and Edith (Archer) Sylvester. Arley was raised by her stepfather Melvin Ingersoll. She graduated from Lowville High School. A marriage to Cecil D. Dykes ended in divorce. Arley married Raymond L. Backus June 21, 1946. Mr. Backus passed away March 11, 1969, leaving Mrs. Backus to raise four children. Arley worked for many years as a waitress and in retail stores. Later in life she took care of the elderly in their homes.

Surviving are three sons and 2 daughter in laws: Cecil G. Dykes, Georgia; Raymond and Joanne Backus, Poughkeepsie; Ronald and Donna Backus, Watertown. Three daughters and one son in law; Penny and James Larkin, Watertown; Joanne Backus, Rochester; Christine Travis, Watertown. Two sisters; Betty Cooper, Michigan; Cherie Brigham, Lowville. Nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A daughter Sharon Charlebois and a brother George Ingersoll died before her.

There were no calling hours and the funeral was private at the discretion of the family. Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.
