ALEXANDRIA BAY Pine Tree Point Resort on Anthony Street is up for sale.
The 10-acre resort at 70 Anthony St. and three adjoining lots owned by Melissa A. and Richard S. Thomson will be auctioned in August by the J.P. King Auction Co.
Mr. Thomson said he and his wife had purchased the resort in 1996, four years after they got married, but that the property has remained in the Thomson family for almost 60 years now.
Pine Tree Point used to be a residence with eight bedrooms when the Thomson family purchased the waterfront property in the 1950s.
According to the auctioneer, the original building dates back to 1917.
The residence was expanded and renovated by the Thomsons into a private club with 22 bedrooms and was turned into a resort in the late 1960s.
During that era we had people staying for two months at a time and they came back year after year, he said.
Mr. Thomson said he started managing the resort in 1979 and he wishes to retire now.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomson will remain in Alexandria Bay and will continue operating their other businesses, including the James Street dance club Downtown.
If its going to be purchased, it needs to be fully renovated, Mr. Thomson said, adding that it would likely be a multimillion-dollar task to fix up the facilitys 96 bedrooms and suites, restaurant and bar and perhaps put in a nice spa.
Mr. Thomson said he and his wife decided to auction off the resort and neighboring lots instead of trying to sell them through a local real estate agent because they thought theyd be able to reach a wider market.
The auction is Aug. 6 at the resort.
