Mitchell seeks Ogdensburg council seat

Republican newcomer Brian R. Mitchell is running for Ogdensburg City Council.

Mr. Mitchell, 31, has been since 2008 the school food service manager for the Ogdensburg City School District and St. Marguerite D’Youville Academy.

A 2001 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, and college-educated in Florida, Mr. Mitchell said Monday that city Republican officials wanted someone “young and with fresh ideas,” and asked him to run.

He agreed.

“I think that the opportunity is there and the time is right,” he said, adding that he wants to be someone who will “step up to the plate for the city.”

Mr. Mitchell said he has personally compelling reasons for running.

“It is my future,” he said. “It is my children’s future.”

Mr. Mitchell’s opinion of what the important campaign issues are is a familiar one.

“Employment is a key issue in the city,” he said. “And job development.”

Tourism is also an important commodity that the city must never stop pursuing, Mr. Mitchell said, and look no further than the St. Lawrence River for the reason why.

“We have the most beautiful body of water here,” he said.

The city was at its best, Mr. Mitchell said, when mobilizing against the closing of Ogdensburg Correctional Facility and, lately, the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center.

There is, however, room for improvement. Mr. Mitchell said that too often new and expanding businesses are confronted with too much city regulatory paperwork.

“The city makes it so complex,” he said.

Mr. Mitchell and his wife, Trina R.E., have two children, daughter Kaleigh A., 5, and son Ayden R., 3.

There are three vacancies on the council in the November election. Incumbents Michael D. Morley and Daniel E. Skamperle are seeking re-election. R. Storm Cilley is not.
