MORRISTOWN — The Morristown Central School District Board of Education is reviewing applications to replace Principal O. Michael Wills as he moves to become the district’s business teacher.

As part of the process, Mr. Wills will see his salary reduced from roughly $70,000 to $52,000.

Mr. Wills and Superintendent David J. Glover declined to comment on the reason behind the career change and pay cut, but Mr. Wills has taught business courses in the past.

After acting as a general manager for nine years at the Royal Glass Co. in Capitol Heights, Md., a position he left in 1996, Mr. Wills taught business classes at the college level in Maryland for several years.

Mr. Wills was hired as principal at Morristown in 2004, but was laid off for budgetary reasons in 2008.

He was hired again as principal in 2011; in the interim, he taught business and technology classes at Edwards-Knox Central School, Russell, and taught at SUNY Potsdam.

“Having run a business, it gives you a really strong background for teaching business. You have a wealth of experiences you can share with students,” Mr. Wills said.

“It’s one thing to say something from a book; it’s another to be able to speak from personal experience.”

Mr. Wills said he hopes his classes will give students an opportunity to launch successful careers.

“I believe that business electives are excellent choices to have,” Mr. Wills said.

“Business is one of those things that relates directly to real life.”

Mr. Wills said details of the courses he will be teaching still are being worked out.

“We’re looking at being able to offer students a variety of business courses,” Mr. Wills said.

Mr. Glover said the district hopes to hire a new principal by the end of July.
