Heuvelton Labor Day Committee disbanding after 16 years

HEUVELTON — The Heuvelton Labor Day Committee is disbanding after 16 years because of an aging membership and the increasing cost of funding the Labor Day celebrations.

Mayor Barbara A. Lashua said she is attempting to find another organization that will continue the Labor Day Committee’s legacy.

“We’re proud of what we did,” said Shirley A. Todd, a member of the committee.

The committee has spent the past 16 years organizing Labor Day celebrations in Heuvelton, including a fireworks display and parade.

“We just kept it going year to year,” Mrs. Todd said, adding that the events also included an annual walk/run, games by the Heuvelton boat launch, an auction, dancing and lots of eating.

Mrs. Todd said an estimated 5,000 people came out for the 2012 events.

“We had one of the best fireworks displays in all of St. Lawrence County,” she said. “It was probably 25 minutes long.”

But the event costs $8,000 to $10,000 to pull off, Mrs. Todd said, and it’s a tall order for the three-member committee and its volunteers to raise that much money.

She said it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find locations that will host fundraisers, and with the price of gas increasing, traveling to far-flung locations was eating into the final tally.

“We put a lot of thought into it,” Mrs. Todd said of the decision to disband. “We’re happy we kept it going that long.”

In particular, Mrs. Todd said, she is “happy the young people grew up with it.”

“It’s time to let somebody else take it over,” she said, though so far no one has stepped forward to continue the tradition.
