As a micropolitan statistical area, Watertown/Fort Drum was ranked fifth best for economic strength out of 576 such areas in the nation, according to a study by POLICOM Corp., an economic development firm.
Micropolitan populations in the study had populations of 10,000 to 49,999 residents.
The study by the firm ranks economies based on the standard of living of people who live and work there. Micropolitan areas that garner high rankings, such as Watertown, have experienced rapid, consistent growth in size and quality for an extended period of time, according to a company news release. In 2004, the area was ranked 212th.
