A Fort Drum soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday, according to a release issued Monday night by the Department of Defense.
According to the announcement, Spc. Javier Sanchez, 28, of Greenfield, Calif., died during a mounted patrol in Sar Rowzah, Afghanistan, when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device.
Spc. Sanchez was a part of the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
He is the divisions 299th combat death since Sept. 11.
