A fire at an abandoned West Main Street building early Monday is being considered as arson, according to city fire investigators.
The fire was called in around 8:45 a.m., with crews working through the two-story building until they found the fuel for the fire, a collection of trash in a concrete trench.
Its safe to assume somebody set that trash on fire, said Battalion Chief Patrick J. Wiley. The fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes, he said.
Though the building had been abandoned for some time, Mr. Wiley said food containers and other trash made it appear that people may have been living in the space.
He said investigators were looking into the ownership of the building, which may be in the process of being sold.
Also responding to the fire were city police and Guilfoyle Ambulance.
