WEST STOCKHOLM Community members of all ages spent Sunday afternoon here for a day at the races.
The West Stockholm Fire Department hosted its second annual lawn mower races at the firemens field, Pickle Street. The $5 admission fee, along with proceeds from the concession stand and raffle tickets, all raised money for the fire department.
Each team or racer had to bring its own lawn mowers and register for the race by being a member of the Northern New York Lawn Mower Racing Association, said Jason L. Russell, West Stockholm firefighter and organizer of the fundraiser.
Mr. Russell came up with the idea of lawn mower racing as a fundraiser for the department two and a half years ago.
Mr. Russells cousin Torey J. Russell is an assistant fire chief in West Stockholm who said last years event raised approximately $1,800. He said he hoped to see a higher number this year. Its nice to be able to see the fire department members out doing something, because normally when they see us, were doing something in an emergency situation, he said. It gives an opportunity for community members to give back to the department, and in a way, the department can give back to them.
The races featured Superstock, Juniors, Sportsmen, Mod XR, Pro Stock and Pro Mod. Participants had to be at least 16 years old for all races except the Juniors, which was for ages 10 to 16.
Its great for our community to come out and support us because it is one of the annual fundraising events we have now, West Stockholm Fire Chief Robert E. White said.
For Rensselaer Falls firefighter Dallas R. Denny, this event means more than just another weekend race because the money is going to a fire department.
He and his brother Kenneth A. Denny have been racing in Pro Mod races for approximately three years. Their team name is Two Brothers Racing, and they race every weekend during the summer.
Kenny started lawn mower racing in a small class. I came to watch him and decided to build myself one, Mr. Denny said. Weve been racing ever since.
Dallas Denny said it took him about two months to build his first mower.
Theyre all lawn mower, so its a lot of work and a lot of money, but its fun, he said.
