Brian H. Kern, a Norwood native and Norwood-Norfolk Central School graduate (class of 1974), has self-published “Deep New Snow,” a poetry collection.

The book includes the poem, “Bag by the Door,” a recent prize-winner in a West Virginia contest.

Mr. Kern graduated from Canton ATC in 1978, prior to serving a two-year term with the Peace Corps in West Africa. Later, as a Defense Department civilian, he worked in the southeastern U.S. and spent three years working in Europe. He left federal service in 2005 to work as a full-time journalist and staff writer for several news publications before returning to the federal service in 2008, and is now stationed in West Virginia.

“Deep New Snow” is an eclectic collection based on true experiences bookended by his residence at both the northern and southern regions of the Appalachian Mountain chain. “Regional readers will recognize a few local references ... some in metaphor, some literal,” Mr. Kern said.

Copies of the book can be purchased for $9.99 at www.createspace.com/4298838 or by searching Deep New Snow at www.amazon.com

“The Syracuse Fan’s Survival Guide to the ACC” by Mike Waters and Mark Bialczak (Reedy Press), looks at the move to the Atlantic Coast Conference by the Syracuse University men’s basketball team.

Mr. Waters is the longtime basketball writer for the Syracuse Post-Standard. Mark Bialczak was sports editor and music and entertainment writer for the Syracuse Post-Standard. He now writes for his own blog, markbialczak.com.

Their book looks at the history of the ACC schools and offers tips for the Syracuse fan who follows the Orange at home and on the road.

The book is available on amazon.com for $16.
