The former commander of Fort Drum, Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, will assume command of U.S. Army Central Command and Third Army, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., on Tuesday.

He will replace Lt. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks in the role.

Gen. Terry previously led V Corps in Wiesbaden, Germany, until it formally deactivated June 12. The unit had been in Europe since World War I and at the time of its closure it had served for more than 60 years consecutively in Europe.

At the time, Gen. Terry also served as commander/deputy commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.

Gen. Terry led Fort Drum from 2009 to 2011.
