WEST CARTHAGE — The village Board of Trustees agreed to acquire one of two properties originally listed in the recent Jefferson County tax auction during its meeting last week.

Mayor Scott M. Burto said the village is moving forward with acquiring the property at 99 Champion St. Before the auction, the village requested the parcel be removed from the list and to purchase it from Jefferson County for $1 with the understanding if it is ever sold, the back taxes will be paid. Village officials did not want someone to purchase the 53-by-175-foot vacant parcel and try to build on it, Trustee Scott J. Sullivan said. The village has maintained the property for years, which Mayor Burto said will continue, but no solid plans have been made.

“I have talked with some of the board members about possibly placing a welcome sign at the entrance to the community,” he said.

Village officials also had an interest in the property at 21 N. Main St., which was sold at the auction for $65,000 plus the auctioneer’s fee to a neighbor, Mark Pominville. According to Mr. Burto, Mr. Pominville wants to demolish the building and has asked for the village’s help. Mr. Burto said he would ask the village attorney for options but noted the village may be able to help with tipping fees at the landfill.

“I don’t want to get involved with tearing down houses,” Trustee David Z. Rounds said.
