AKWESASNE - An alarm notified the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday that there was a significant drop in water pressure at the Office for the Aging Senior Center.

When the fire department arrived, the building had two to four inches of water covering most areas within the center.

The fire department, maintenance workers, Senior Center staff and tribal administration responded to the call. All efforts were made to minimize the damages and dehumidify the building as quick as possible. Luckily, with efforts from everyone, most equipment was saved. However, some of the flooring and sheetrock must be replaced.

For the safety of seniors and community members, the building will be closed until the repairs are complete and the building is safe for our elders to occupy.

However, the following services will be provided for our elders throughout this time:

■ Home-delivered meals

■ Scheduled transportations

■ Elders home maintenance services

■ Home care

Office for the Aging staff members will be temporarily located in the Tribal Community Building and may be contacted at 518-358-2963 or 518-358-2272.

The Office for the Aging Director, Kallen Martin will be putting a notice out again on Friday to update everyone on the anticipated opening date. “Niawen:kówa. Thank you very much for your patience and cooperation during this time,” she said.
