POTSDAM - Earlier this month, Vivian Coburn visited Canton-Potsdam Hospital; however, it wasn’t a traditional visit for health care services or to see a loved one.

Ms. Coburn was there to donate stuffed animals and get-well cards to children recovering at the hospital.

Earlier this month Ms. Coburn celebrated her birthday as many 6-year-old girls would, with family, friends, cake, ice cream, and lots and lots of giggling. Only, instead of gifts, she asked her friends to bring a new stuffed animal to donate and instead of playing pin the tail on the donkey, they created homemade get well cards.

“When Vivian was 2 years old, she made an unexpected visit to the emergency room, where she was welcomed with a teddy bear to ease her anxiety and provide a sense of comfort; that experience inspired her to do the same for other children,” according to Vivian’ mom, Sarah Coburn.

“Vivian and her friends Ava, Ella, Emily, Haley, Madeline, Molly, and Winnie are special little girls. It’s heartwarming to see them embracing and enjoying philanthropy so early in life,” added Mrs. Coburn. “I’m very proud of each of them”.

Children are treated at Canton-Potsdam Hospital each year within the emergency room, laboratory, imaging, cardiology, and ambulatory surgery. Some stay one or more days in the pediatric room within the third floor nursing unit.

“I’d like to thank Vivian for her thoughtful donation,” said Beverly Rascoe, RN. “She put herself in another child’s shoes and truly understood the nature and purpose of her donation. I have no doubt these stuffed animals will be appreciated and loved by our young patients.”

Canton-Potsdam Hospital gratefully accepts donations of new items that may safely be used in a medical environment. Individuals interested in donating items, may contact Tracy Jarvis at tjarvis@cphospital.org or call (315) 261-5401.
