BELLEVILLE The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Belleville Henderson Central School are Nathan Contino and Samantha Furman. The outstanding vocational student is Emily Schenck.
Mr. Contino is the son of Michael and Kimberly Contino, Henderson. He is enrolled in the early admissions program at Jefferson Community College, Watertown, where he is taking classes full-time and earned a grade point average of 4.0.
He served as class president his freshman, sophomore and junior years, treasurer for the Foreign Language Club, member of the History, Chess and Library Clubs. Mr. Contino is a member of the marching band, chorus, Ski Club, Henderson Harbor Junior Yacht Club and National Honor Society and a previous member of the National Junior Honor Society.
In school productions, he played the Mysterious Man in Into the Woods and the Wizard in Wizard of Oz.
He has received several awards, including the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, Rochester Institute of Technologys Computing Medal and Scholarship, New York State Comptrollers Student Achievement Award, RIT Presidential Scholar, National Buckeye Scholar, presidents list at Jefferson Community College, Watertown, and was named a WWNY Channel 7 Academic All-Star. Mr. Contino participated on the schools Whiz Quiz team for three years, with last years team competing at the international level. He volunteers his time to scribe notes for a peer at JCC.
He will attend the University of Rochester and major in English and computers.
Miss Furman is the daughter of Howard and Mary Furman, Henderson. She is president of National Honor Society, secretary of FFA, was secretary for National Junior Honor Society and a dairy ambassador.
She is a member of Foreign Language Club, Business Club and Whiz Quiz, and a past member of National Junior Honor Society. Miss Furman has received several awards, including awards for highest Regents score in English and U.S. history, Outstanding Achievement Award in Foreign Language, FFA Star Green Hand Award, State Star and Agricultural Placement Award, Elmira College Key Award Scholarship, RIT Competing Medal Scholarship, (FFA) Empire Degree Award and New York State Comptrollers Student Achievement Award.
She volunteers at Samaritan Medical Center.
Miss Furman will attend Jefferson Community College to major in nursing. She plans to continue her education after JCC at Upstate Medical Universitys College of Nursing, Syracuse.
Miss Schenck is the daughter of Stuart and Phyliss Schenck, Ellisburg. She is secretary of National Honor Society, is a member of National Technical Honor Society and was a member of National Junior Honor Society and Art Club.
She has been a member of the cheerleading team for three years, serving as co-captain then captain in her junior and senior years, receiving both Sportsmanship Award and Athletic Award.
Miss Schenck has received several awards, including awards for highest regents score in algebra 2, Honor and Effort Roll ninth through 12th grades, Foreign Language Club and Scholastic Achievement Award.
Through the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, she earned the Professionalism Award, student of the month honors for October and April, and MOS certifications.
Miss Schenck will attend Jefferson Community College to major in business management. She plans to later transfer to Clarkson University, Potsdam, and eventually open her own restaurant.
