A 14-year-old Watertown youth escaped injury Wednesday afternoon when he fell down a 25-foot bank under the Court Street Bridge, landing on the edge of the Black River.
Fire Battalion Chief Patrick J. Wiley said Zachary Ward climbed over a fence under the bridge and fell about 1:30 p.m., apparently hitting brush and bushes that slowed his fall. He landed unharmed behind the former Guilfoyle Ambulance Service property on Newell Street.
He was sitting up, talking, and was fine when I got to him, Chief Wiley said.
Even though the youth was not hurt, he used his cellhone to call emergency dispatchers after realizing he was not able to climb back up the bank. The chief was able to climb down in another area and reach the boy, who was then tied to a rope and walked back up the incline.
Chief Wiley said it was fortunate the youth did not enter the river, as it is flowing heavily following recent rains.
