MASSENA - The technical aspects of golf are one of the most analyzed in all of the sporting realm.

But OFA Coach Joe Lynch spoke about intangibles after his Blue Devils followed up a Northern Conference Division I title by winning their school’s first Section 10 Championship in 10 years, on Friday, at the par 71 Massena Golf and Country Club.

Playing in cold, soggy conditions which forced a three-hour delay for the start of the tournament, the Devils crafted a 436-460 margin over second place Malone. Potsdam shaded Massena 469-470 for third place.

Tupper Lake took fifth place overall and captured the Section 10 Division II title with a 503-513 margin over Salmon River. NAC Division II champions Madrid-Waddington followed at 525.

“These guys really wanted it and the big key was the way they practiced so hard everyday. They were very steady as a team and everyone came through all season,” said Lynch.

“I was very confident coming in today because they had prepared so well. They practiced hard all week and then played on Sundays. And they made trips down here to play this course.”

Like they had done all season, the Devils bunched their scores tightly led by Brandon Mullin who tallied an 82, three strokes behind Massena’s NAC D1 MVP Hunter Francis and Brushton-Moira’s NAC D2 MVP Devin Delisle at 79. The two NAC MVPs will lead a 25-player field into today’s quest for the Section 10 Medalist Championship and state tournament berths.

Delisle is also the defending Section 10 medalist while Francis is making a return trip to the final threesome.

“I played in the final group last year so that experience will be help me,” said Francis.

Asked if playing on his home course would be an advantage the soft-spoken Francis smiled and said “I hope so”.

OFA’s five-man scoring unit will all be in today’s field which will begin teeing off at 9 a.m.

Mullin personified the Devils’ ability to avoid the many pitfalls lurking among the picturesque vistas of the course when describing his play.

“I didn’t have a birdie but I didn’t make a double bogey,” he said.

Conor Hannan stood fourth at 84, Dillon Binion stood fifth at 86 and Tristan Moore and Jed McRoberts were tied for 15th at 92. OFA’s sixth man Alec Manke posted a 99.

Rounding out today’s 25 state-tournament hopefuls are: Evan Hanna of Malone (87), Brendan Dobbins of Massena (87), Ryan McDonald of Potsdam (88), Dan Stone of Potsdam (88), T.J. Roundpoint of Salmon River (89), eighth grader Riley Amell who led Tupper Lake to the D2 title (90), Eliott Vanier of Malone (90), Logan Lamb of Salmon River (90), Konnor Bigwarfe of Potsdam (91), Jeff Mott of Madrid-Waddington (91), Malone’s fine female player Alexandra Sprague (91), Kendrick Swamp of Massena (93), Davis Sprague of Malone (93), Hunter Tuttle of Edwards-Knox (93), Dan Cruickshank of Potsdam (94), Eugene Bishop of Gouverneur (94), Thomas Ryan of Norwood-Norfolk (94) and Hunter Russell of Brushton-Moira (96).

The competition for the Section 10 Girls Championship saw Katie Stuart prevail over Mary Young of Madrid-Waddington 105-118.

Section 10 Golf Chairman Tim Hayes commended all the players for their shot making and sportsmanship.

“We didn’t have one problem today and I thought that the scores were lower than I expected,” said Hayes.

“It was a tough day out there and everyone deserves a lot of credit.”
