Tops Friendly Markets announced Thursday that it has completed the acquisition of four Big M Supermarkets stores in Watertown, Adams, Sandy Creek and Boonville.
The move completes an agreement made by Tops in March to purchase the stores from brothers William J. and Gordon G. Bonisteel, who were co-owners. The combined 280 employees at the four locations will have an opportunity to keep their jobs under the plan.
The purchase by the grocery retailer expands its footprint further into Northern and Central New York and follows its previous acquisition of three Big M stores in Elbridge, Mexico and Jordan earlier this year.
We are excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, as we bring these new stores into the Tops family, said Frank Curci, Tops Markets president and CEO. These stores are a natural addition to our current footprint, and we look forward to meeting the needs of our new neighbors and customers, providing them with a positive shopping experience that focuses on variety, freshness, convenience and exceptional value.
Mr. Curci said Tops will pursue a capital improvement program at the four stores, which will be remodeled and will switch to the Tops banner by late June.
The company has offered all associates at each of the four locations continued employment, and it will continue to operate the stores without any interruption in service.
The affected stores are at 1330 Washington St., Watertown; 10916 Route 11, Adams; 6103 N. Main St., Sandy Creek; and 261 Utica Blvd., Boonville.
