The city of Ogdensburg’s Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center is looking to get busier in the spring and summer months with events aimed at attracting the public and generating revenues for the 12-year-old arena on West River Street.Since a flat $400-a-day fee was supplemented in March by a $40-an-hour rate, the events have been percolating.

“We’ve had several birthday parties, Project Graduation, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center family fun day,” said Matthew J. Curatolo, the city’s parks and recreation director.

Mr. Curatolo’s mission is also to make the Lockwood Arena as much of a revenue generator in the warm weather months with sports and games like soccer and kickball as youth and club hockey and ice skating makes it in the winter.

“It’s a good rain location,” he said. “And the (rink) boards are still up.”

So, however, are the losses and the city hopes to eventually lift the Lockwood Arena out of consecutive years of deficit budgets.

In 2012, the arena posted $36,000 against just over $72,000, for a negative balance of $36,000.

More spring and summer events, Mr. Curatolo is cautiously optimistic, will turn the year-end numbers from red to black.

“Hopefully, this will help us cut into the bottom line,” he said.
