Karl J. “Archie” Vebber, 59, of 649 Lake Cove Pointe Circle, Winter Garden, Fl, passed May 21, 2013 at the emergency room at Samaritan Medical Center after being suddenly stricken at the home of his father in Black River.

A funeral mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at Holy Family Church with Rev. Steven Murray, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery. Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 24 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown.

Born on July 10, 1953 in Watertown, NY, son of Richard Vebber and Dorothy Shallack, he graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1971.

He married Sarala Ruoff on June 28, 1975 at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Black River. The couple resided in Black River until 2012.

Mr. Vebber worked for the Village of Black for 33 years and retired in 2008 as the Superintendent of Public Works. Following his retirement he worked for the Jefferson County Highway Department for three summers.

The couple moved to Florida in 2012 where he continued to work for his son in law, Ashley Rumble.

Karl was very active in the community. He was a charter member of the Black River Ambulance Squad, former member of the Black River Fire Department, former Police Deputy for the Village of Black River, Past Trustee of the Watertown Elks Lodge #496, member of the “Orphan Bowling Team” for the Elks, and member of the NYS Rural Water Association.

He worked on the Town of LeRay planning board for 12 years and became a Town of LeRay Councilman.

He enjoyed hunting, skeet shooting, was a member of the NRA and a proud Rush Limbaugh fan.

He belonged to the Bear Mountain Hunting Club in Cranberry Lake and in 2007, he, Pete Queior and many of his friends started the Backyard Boys Hunting Club.

He especially loved spending time with his family and four beautiful granddaughters.

Among his survivors are his loving wife of 38 years, Sarala R. Vebber, Winter Garden, FL; his two daughters and their husbands, Kristen V. and Ashley R. Rumble, Windermere, FL, Amy V. and Rich L. Pierce III, Torrington, CT; his father, Richard Vebber, Winter Garden, FL; fourgranddaughters, Madeline, Ella, Lily Rumble and Samantha Pierce; three cousins, Sister Kathleen Clark, St. Augustine, Fl, Raymond N. Vebber, Greensboro, NC, Richard C. Vebber, Black River.

His mother, Dorothy Vebber passed in 2008 and his sister Conni Vebber passed in July of 2012.

Karl was such a presence in all our lives and was such a generous, caring man to his friends, of which he had many. He was a guy who loved humor and beer. So we all need to laugh, tell a joke and salute a too short life well lived. He was a terrific, stern father and a fun loving “Grampie”.
