Jefferson Community College baseball coach John Northrop has been named Region 3 Division III Coach of the Year, and two of his players, Kyle Simmons and Tyler Decker, were selected to the All-Region 3 team.

Northrop, in his fifth year as the Cannoneers’ head man, was previously chosen Mid-State Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year. He led JCC to a 26-19 overall record, including 20-8 in the East Division, and into the Region 3 playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Under Northrop, JCC set team records for runs scored (356), runs allowed (254), hits (446), batting average (.354), runs batted in (317), triples (30), on-base percentage (.479) and fielding percentage (.961).

“I am much honored to win this award amongst the great coaches in Region 3 baseball,’’ said Northrop, a JCC graduate. “We as a group were able to accomplish high goals this season because of my coaching staff that helps me each day. We have built a great environment for players to come in and learn from being competitive with each other. This award is due to their effort to become better.”

Simmons, a freshman shortstop/pitcher from Watertown High School, batted .448 with 52 RBIs, 44 runs scored, 14 doubles and eight triples.

South Jefferson product Decker, a sophomore first baseman, hit .425, drove in 60 runs and had 13 doubles, six triples and four home runs.

n Simmons will play for the Fulton (Ky.) Railroaders in the Ohio Valley League this summer. He will play 45 games during a two-month season.

Decker and sophomore pitchers Josh Amann of Carthage and Jacob Welch (Spencerport) have signed temporary contracts with the Watertown Rams of the Perfect Game Collegiate League. Their contracts run for two weeks. After that, they may be offered a full season contract depending on the organizations roster numbers.
