Jefferson Community College received the go-ahead from the Watertown City Council to build a dormitory that will house about 290 students in 64 suites.

Council members approved the site plan Monday night for the 90,000-square-foot dorm building on the JCC campus, 1220 Coffeen St. Earlier this month, the city Planning Board approved the site plan for the $17.5 million project.

JCC officials said Monday night the college hopes to get a building permit for the building’s foundation by July 1 and a building permit for the entire structure by Sept. 1.

If all goes well, the student housing will be ready for the fall of 2014, JCC officials said.

The Faculty-Student Association will run the dormitory.
