Unemployment in Jefferson and Lewis counties increased in April compared to the same month in 2012, while the number of jobless residents in St. Lawrence County fell, according to numbers released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor.

Compared to April 2012, unemployment in St. Lawrence County sank from 10.2 to 9.8 percent. Jefferson County’s rate increased last month from 10.2 to 10.3 percent, and in Lewis County it rose from 10.3 to 10.9 percent.

Compared to March, unemployment in April decreased in all three counties. The rate dropped from 10.8 to 9.8 percent in St. Lawrence County, 11.4 to 10.3 percent in Jefferson County, and 12.2 to 10.9 percent in Lewis County.

In contrast to April 2012, the jobless rate in upstate New York’s 52-county region decreased from 8.1 to 7.6 percent last month. The statewide rate dropped from 8.1 to 7.3 percent over the same time period.
