CANTON — A severe thunderstorm is moving through St. Lawrence County shortly after 6 p.m., downing trees and power lines and leaving communities in the dark.

Reports of downed trees included one on Park Street near Lawrence Funeral Home that struck a car. Another was reported blocking County Route 25 in DeKalb.

As of 7:15 p.m., National Grid’s online outage map showed more than 5,200 people without power, mostly in Canton, DeKalb and the Pyrites and North Russell areas. Outages were also shown near Madrid, Norwood, Colton, Gouverneur and Fowler.

The company’s website estimated that power would be restored by 10:45 p.m.

A utility pole and power lines were reported down on County Route 24 outside of Canton.
