POTSDAM — The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department still is investigating the scene where a 45-year-old Potsdam man was struck by a locomotive Sunday night.

Kevin P. Sieg of Pleasant Valley Road in Potsdam is being treated in Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where he is listed in serious condition.

The Sheriff’s Department still is looking into why Mr. Sieg was on the tracks when he was struck by a CSX locomotive at 10 p.m. off Sissonville Road. Sheriff Kevin M. Wells said it was unclear.

“He had to put himself on the tracks at some point,” Sheriff Wells said.

“We’re still waiting for the toxicology reports to come back,” Mr. Wells added.

The sheriff said his deputies are recreating the scene where the train-pedestrian accident occurred using laser measurements. According to sheriff’s detectives, sheriff’s deputies and village police officers responded to the scene and found Mr. Sieg on the railroad bed near the train. Deputies said he suffered severe head and internal injuries and was taken by Potsdam Rescue to the Potsdam Airport and flown by LifeNet helicopter to Upstate Medical University.

CSX officials were on the scene for approximately four hours working on the investigation with police before the train was released, and police said the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Sheriff’s deputies and detectives were assisted by Potsdam police, fire and rescue and state police.
