SACKETS HARBOR — An off-duty Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy helped rescue a Fort Drum man who had fallen off a cliff early Saturday.

Deputies said emergency responders received a report at about 3:50 a.m. that a man had fallen to the edge of Lake Ontario from a cliff behind General Smith Drive and Park Street. Deputy Travis F. Alcombrack, who is also a volunteer firefighter, responded in his own boat and was able to quickly locate Lane Reeder, 24, who was huddled on rocks near the water.

Mr. Reeder was taken by Sackets Harbor Ambulance Squad to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he was treated for mild hypothermia, according to deputies. In addition to deputies and the ambulance squad, the county’s STAR team and Guilfoyle Ambulance responded, along with the village’s fire and police departments.
