An immigration reform bill has finally been introduced in the Senate. Republicans who previously indicated support for reform are now either silent, or actively doing what they do best, obstruct. Apparently they have received a script on how to proceed from their personal think tank, the Heritage Foundation.
This script came in the form of a report co-authored by Jason Richwine, PhD. It turns out that Dr. Richwine, a senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation also has ties to the National Policy Institute, an advocacy group for white Americans. He also contributes to Alternative Right, an online forum for white supremacists, Holocaust deniers and other hatemongers. Dr. Richwines racist attitudes go back to Harvard where his thesis on immigration reasoned that Hispanics have IQs substantially lower than the white native population, give birth to low-IQ children and have low-IQ grandchildren. This then is the person writing an anti-immigration report for the Republicans, who then try to sell its content to the American people as fact.
Republican positions on women, labor unions, race and now immigration, prove that they have an outdated and flawed perspective that seeks to return America to the past. This however, takes us all the way back to 1836 when Samuel Morton was measuring skulls and weighing brains in order to prove the inferiority of the black race.
Immigration reform is necessary. The people who come across the Mexican border illegally are risking their very lives to have a chance at the American dream. Their determination cannot be stopped by fences and armed patrols. They will still come. Many are already here. The rational approach is to devise a method by which those same people can be part of a guest worker program or be on a pathway to citizenship. It is now time to end the need for illegal entry into this country. Dont let the racist views of a few cause you to fear those whose skin may be browner. To ignore or impede reform is to live in the past. The problems can be solved, but only if they are intelligently addressed.
