A fire engulfed a barn at 16421 Route 11 Tuesday afternoon, though no injuries were reported.

The blaze apparently began while the owners were cutting up a semi trailer to salvage scrap metal, according to investigators.

It started about 3:30 p.m.

The Town of Watertown Fire Department was the first agency to respond.

It took firefighters approximately 40 minutes to get the fire under control, according to Chief Charles M. Dillon.

The barn was a total loss and was knocked down with a Gradall hydraulic excavator, Mr. Dillon said.

The property was not insured, according to Jefferson County Director of Fire and Emergency Management Joseph D. Plummer.

Mr. Plummer said the firefighters on scene did a commendable job keeping the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings during high winds.

The fire melted the siding on a nearby garage, Mr. Plummer said.

The Town of Watertown Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Adams, Adams Center, Sackets Harbor, Rutland, Brownville and Rodman fire departments.
