MASSENA - Bundle up — but not for long. The recent cold snap will be gone soon.

What may be the last of the north country’s freezing temperatures hit Tuesday morning, and lows will swing back into the upper 40s and mid-50s by Wednesday.

“We’ll see a temperature jump of 10 to 15 degrees,” said James A. Mitchell, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Buffalo.

And although it may have felt like it, no record low temperatures were reached Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

Although Buffalo and Burlington NWS put out freeze warnings for Oswego County and the Champlain Valley, all areas of Northern New York hit below freezing overnight Sunday. Freeze warnings to warn farmers are based on typical last spring frost dates for planting zones, and that date doesn’t arrive until Wednesday for Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

“It’ll be below freezing everywhere,” Mr. Mitchell said. “A very large air mass moved in overhead straight out of Canada and down into the northeast United states. (Tuesday), the wind will start switching around.”

At Burlington, Vt., National Weather Service meteorologist Jason E. Neilson predicted Massena will be two or three degrees above record low temperatures of 28 degrees. Because of the database system he was using, he said he did not know the year that record was set.

“We’ll get through this stretch here and then start warming up again,” he said, predicting temperatures into the 70s by the end of the week.

Mr. Mitchell said this type of weather pattern is typical as spring shifts into summer.

“It looks like we’re going to an above normal temperature again,” he said.
