NORFOLK - The American Red Cross and Norwood Norfolk Elementary School are joining together for the second annual blood drive in memory of Joanne Bigwarfe from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Norwood Norfolk Elementary School at 7852 state Highway 56 in Norwood.

Joanne Bigwarfe was the elementary principal at Norwood-Norfolk Central School for four years. During her tenure as principal, Mrs. Bigwarfe was a K-Kids Advisor and helped raise money for a variety of organizations including the Red Cross. Joanne was also a loving wife and mother of two children. Her entire family shared a love of sports. Joanne was the president of the Potsdam Booster Club, and she was trying to help Norwood-Norfolk establish a booster club as well.

This blood drive is held in memory of Mrs. Bigwarfe because following surgery to remove a cancerous tumor she required several blood transfusions. “We wish we could have done more to help our friend, but in lieu of that we want to do what she would do were she still here by donating blood to help others,” said Becky Kingsley, elementary school principal at Norwood-Norfolk Central School.

Local blood donors are needed all year round to ensure the blood supply stays strong. Approximately every two seconds a patient in the United States needs blood. That’s why your blood donation through the Red Cross is so important. Your blood donation can help save the life of a real person in our community. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. All presenting donors during the month of May will be eligible to enter to win a $50 Lowe’s gift card.*

Walk-ins are always welcome, but donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visiting redcrossblood.org.
