Port Leyden- Verla Gibbs, 79, formerly of the Wild Cat Road, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Lewis Co. Extended Care Facility, Lowville, after a long illness.

She was born in Turin, on October 14, 1933, a daughter of Leonard and Lulu Burr Gibbs. Verla grew up in Turin and received her education in Turin and Glenfield. She was first employed at the Grey Stone Manor Nursing Home in Martinsburg, after that Verla was employed as a garment inspector at Lally Manufacturing Co. of Port Leyden. For many years she also baked and decorated cakes for weddings and all occasions. She married Howard J. Disch, Sr. who died in 2005. Before moving to Wild Cat Road, she had resided for many years on the Moose River Road, near Port Leyden.

Verla brought much enjoyment to many people through her talents as a wonderful cook and baker. She also greatly enjoyed knitting and crocheting, raising flowers, feeding the birds, playing bingo and all kinds of games. She found a special joy in writing poetry.

She is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Howard J. (Rita) Disch, Jr. Port Leyden and William L. (Brenda) Disch, Lowville; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Wayne) Allen, Melissa (Carl) LoGalbo, Jason (Nicole) Disch, Kris (April) Beckwith, Sarah (James) Bly, Heather (Justin) Schweinsberg and Carrie Virkler, sixteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and one sister, Matilda Durgan, Boonville. She was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Dayton, Leonard and Daniel, and by sisters, Gloria, Doris and Ruba.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her services on Friday at 11:30 A.M. at Port Leyden Cemetery, Port Leyden, where a grandson, Pastor Jason Disch, will officiate. There are no public calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Lewis Co. Hospice, Inc. P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367. Her funeral arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville.
